Explore Western Expansion with us at CALF's Lowell Ranch!

Exploration, chores, stories and discovery!

Our hands-on activities engage students to learn about pioneers' experiences and role of agriculture in the Western Expansion of the United State.  Your students will gain personal familiarity with choices pioneers made as they prepared to move, ways they learned to survive the long journey and how they built their lives in the new part of the United States.  Students will discover first-hand that a pioneer's life may have been more simple than ours, but it was very hard work!  The importance of Agriculture will be presented throughout the day.

These concepts will be presented during four experiential learning stations.  Student bring their lunch and enjoy a mid-day break inside or out depending on the weather.

Discover what inspired the pioneers to move to the West.  CALF'sHeritage Day learning stations include:

  • Be a Pioneer - Choose items or objects to survive the journey West.  Who will survive!
  • Chores! - Students experience a bit of ranch life by engaging in a chores relay.  It's hard work!
  • Branding - Create a brand and experience the historical significance of branding livestock and the cattle industry’s role in Colorado History
  • Pan for gold -  In East Plum Creek!

Heritage Day starts at 10 am at CALF's Lowell Ranch on Plum Creek (about 3 miles south of Castle Rock).
