Day on the Ranch - Bridging the Urban / Rural Gap
|
CALF is committed to offering programs to provide underserved children and youth living in urban areas with an authentic connection to where their food grows and to rural life.
During our Day on the Ranch programs, CALF's ranch hands and CALF Kids (4-H or FFA members raising livestock projects at CALF's Lowell Ranch) guide our urban participants. Participants experience ranch work, rural hospitality, and enjoy agricultural experiences that are likely unique to them. Activities often include branding, herding livestock, working draft horses, archery, and more. Many participants do not have the means or opportunity to experience all that Colorado offers and have never traveled beyond the city borders. Often their families do not have easy access to fresh fruit and vegetables and/or the opportunity to learn how to grow their own food. This field trip exposes participants to different career opportunities and a lifestyle unique to their own. The Day on the Ranch program pushes both sets of young people (the participants and CALF’s youth leaders) out of their comfort zone where true cross-cultural learning and understanding can occur. |
